In ancient China, there lived two fish: a big one and a small one. They were the best of friends and swam together in the river. One day, they came across a wise old turtle who told them that if they jumped high enough, they could reach the sky. The big fish laughed at this idea but the little fish was curious.
The little fish asked for help from all his friends in the river and together they formed a giant wave to push him up towards the sky. As he leaped higher and higher, he finally reached heaven where he met with gods who granted him three wishes.
The little fish wished for his friend's safety on their journey back to earth, for all creatures to be happy forever, and for everyone to have plenty of food so no one would go hungry again. And so it was; every year after that, people celebrated by throwing rice into rivers as an offering to honor this brave little fish who had brought such good fortune upon them.
