在宋朝时期，契丹军队以二十万之众入侵边境，遂城的防御兵力仅有三千人。杨延昭作为六郎，在遂城坚守一线。当时的遂城，即今徐水县西北二十里的遂城村，与瀑河相望，一道古老的长城连接着两个世界。面对辽兵的猛烈攻击，遂城的人民却显得无比自信，他们告诉六郎：“只要您在此，我们就不怕。”这让杨延昭深感责任重大，他组织全体青壮年，与守军共同抵抗。
天气突变，十月份 suddenly turned cold. Yang Yanzhao ordered the soldiers and civilians to pour water on the city walls, which froze into a thick layer of ice overnight. The next morning, the city walls became an icy barrier that was both strong and slippery, making it impossible for the enemy to climb. The Liao troops tried to scale the walls but slid back down, causing chaos among their ranks.
Taking advantage of this situation, Yang led his forces in a fierce counterattack against the enemy. He killed many Liao soldiers and forced them to retreat with their tails between their legs. This victory earned him further recognition from Emperor Zhenzong who promoted him from Patrol Inspector of Border Defense in Baoding Prefecture (now Baoding City) to Steward of Moshan County (now Renqiu City).
Yang Yanzhao fought off over 100 Liao raids along the border before he passed away at age 57 in Moshan County while serving as its magistrate. His son Yang Wenguo accompanied his father's remains back home when he died. People from nearby cities came out en masse to bid farewell and requested that Yang be buried in Moshan County where he had defended against countless invasions by foreign enemies.
In accordance with these requests, a grand tomb was built for Yang Yanzhao north of Moshan City's northern wall where his armor and weapons were placed alongside him for eternity as a testament to his bravery and dedication towards protecting China's borders.
