Introduction to Chinese Folklore
Chinese folklore is a rich tapestry of stories, legends, and myths that have been passed down for generations. These tales often feature fantastical creatures, supernatural beings, and divine interventions. Among the most beloved characters in these stories is Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King.
The Birth of Sun Wukong
According to legend, Sun Wukong was born from a stone on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. He quickly grew into a powerful monkey with incredible strength and agility. His exploits soon caught the attention of Bodhisattva Subhuti who gave him his name "Wu Kong," meaning "Unbound" or "Free."
Early Adventures
Sun Wukong's early adventures were marked by mischief and mayhem. He stole peaches from the Peach Garden of Immortality where they were guarded by various gods including Chang'e (the Moon Goddess). This act angered Yu Huang (the Jade Emperor), forcing him to hide among humans.
Meeting Tang Sanzang
While living among humans, Sun Wukong met Tang Sanzang - an honest Buddhist monk who was on a quest to retrieve sacred scriptures from India. Recognizing potential in Tang Sanzang's spiritual power and knowledge, he joined forces with him.
