As for Hou Yi's demise, according to historical records found in the Han dynasty text "Huainanzi," it was said that he was killed by his apprentice Peng Meng. The exact circumstances vary between accounts – some say Peng Meng used a peach wood branch to strike Hou Yi down, while others claim he shot him with an arrow. Regardless of the method, Hou Yi died without regaining consciousness and ultimately transformed into Zhong Kui.
This transformation theory was first proposed by historian Gu Jiegang based on textual analysis from Huainanzi.
