然而,这一壮举也激起了其他天界神灵的嫉妒,他们谗言到天帝 ears, eventually leading to his downfall and exile back to the mortal realm.
The legend of "Hou Yi Shooting Down the Sun" has been passed down for thousands of years and remains a fascinating tale in Chinese mythology. Even in modern times, elements from this story have been incorporated into various forms of media, such as video games and novels. For instance, in the popular game "Jade Dynasty," Hou Yi's bow is known as "Divine Hunter Bow," said to possess immense power.
As for Hou Yi's demise, according to historical records found in the Han dynasty text "Huainanzi," it was said that he was killed by his apprentice Peng Meng. The exact circumstances vary between accounts – some say Peng Meng used a peach wood branch to strike Hou Yi down, while others claim he shot him with an arrow. Regardless of the method, Hou Yi died without regaining consciousness and ultimately transformed into Zhong Kui.
This transformation theory was first proposed by historian Gu Jiegang based on textual analysis from Huainanzi. Many books recount the relationship between Hou Yi and Peng Meng as master-apprentice or teacher-student roles. As a renowned archer with unparalleled skills, people sought out Hou Yi for tutelage; among them was Peng Meng who hoped to learn from him.
However, during one fateful moment when Hou Yi ventured outside for hunting while leaving behind his life-saving elixir under Changan (modern-day Xi'an), Peng Meng discovered its existence through manipulation and threatened Changan into surrendering it unless she revealed its location. Afterward, when returning home with joyous news about reuniting with her beloved husband—only to find him deceased—Peng took advantage of this opportunity to deceive him once more by suggesting they shoot at the moon together so that he could see Changan again before passing away peacefully.
Taking heed of these words without realizing their treachery would be fatal for himself later on—the original reason behind shooting at nine suns being foretold by an oracle saying that doing so would result in one's own death—Hou Yin agreed without hesitation due primarily because he believed trustingly trusting someone else who had once saved him earlier but now wished revenge upon killing himself unintentionally at last became victimized after all within hours!
