Dating back to the Song Dynasty. These paintings featured four beauties from Chinese history - Ban Jieyu, Zhao Feiyan, Wang Zhaojun, and Green Pearl - all dressed in imperial robes and adorned with long sleeves. The other painting depicted the Stove God and Guan Yu, a revered figure in Chinese culture. Both of these paintings bore the mark "平阳姬家雕郎" (Pingyang Ji House Carver), which indicates that during the Song Dynasty, these types of character paintings were already quite popular.
The discovery of these two paintings provides strong evidence that by the time of the Song Dynasty, year-long calendars had become an established art form in China.
