The Legend of Chang'e and the Moon Goddess: A Symbol of Fertility and Wisdom
Chang'e, the Moon Goddess, is one of China's most beloved deities. Her legend has been passed down for generations through Chinese folklore and mythology. In this article, we will delve into the story of Chang'e and explore its significance in Chinese culture.
The Origins of Chang'e
According to ancient Chinese myths, Chang'e was a mortal woman who lived during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE). She was known for her exceptional beauty and kindness. One day, while she was collecting herbs in the forest, she stumbled upon an elixir that granted immortality. However, before she could consume it all, her husband discovered her secret and killed himself out of jealousy.
Overcome with grief and regret over his death, Chang'e drank the entire elixir to follow him into death but found herself ascending to heaven instead. The gods were so moved by her story that they transformed her into a goddess and placed her on the moon as punishment for taking up residence among them without permission.
Chang'e's Journey to Immortality
In another version of this tale from "Chinese Folklore," written by Dr. James Legge (1815-1897), there is a passage about how Chang'e became immortal:
"Once upon a time there was a beautiful woman named Ch'ang-ngöng; she had never married because no man could compare with her." This tale is part of "Chinese Folklore" which includes stories such as "Journey Through Western Paradise," where Buddha leads souls through various trials before reaching Nirvana.
This version highlights not only how easily one can fall prey to greed but also shows us what kind-heartedness truly means – even though Ch'ang-ngöng did wrong unintentionally due to love for life itself rather than any selfish motive like wealth or fame., yet still deserves compassion from others when faced with difficult choices between right & wrong actions leading ultimately towards redemption & peace after having learned valuable lessons along way."
