Journey to the West The Adventures of Tang Sanzang
Introduction
The Journey to the West is a famous Chinese novel written by Wu Cheng'en during the Ming dynasty. It tells the story of Tang Sanzang, a Buddhist monk who travels from China to India to retrieve sacred scriptures. Along with three supernatural disciples, Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), Zhu Bajie (Pigsy), and Sha Wujing (Sandy), they face numerous challenges on their journey.
The Origins of the Journey
Tang Sanzang's decision to embark on this perilous journey was driven by his strong faith in Buddhism and his desire to spread its teachings. He knew that he had to obtain sacred scriptures from India, which held great significance for Buddhists worldwide.
The Three Disciples
Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, was once an immortal monkey who lived in a peach tree forest. He gained immense power after consuming peaches that granted him immortality and strength beyond measure. However, he became arrogant and caused chaos in heaven before being subdued by Buddha himself.
Zhu Bajie (Pigsy) was originally a heavenly soldier who fell in love with a mortal woman named Princess Iron Fan but failed miserably due to his inability to resist her charms. Afterward, he joined Tang Sanzang's pilgrimage seeking redemption for his past mistakes.
Sha Wujing (Sandy) started off as an ordinary convict exiled on Mount Emei but later became involved with Tang Sanzang through various events leading up until joining them on their epic journey westward.
Their Adventures
Throughout their long-lasting adventure across mountains and seas filled with treacherous creatures such as demons and monsters, each disciple played vital roles while learning valuable lessons about friendship and humility.
