从小聪明颖慧的诸世器，十五岁就补博士员，可后来却十余次闱试不第。陆家镇上有个陆员外，只有一女叫陆晓晓，她生得异常标致，温柔贤淑。县太爷的儿子早就垂涎陆家的小姐美貌，但当他央求县太爷请媒婆前去提亲时，不料陆晓晓竟然一了。
病情莫名其妙，说不行就不行了，一天下来一口水都喝不进去，没几天，本来好好的一个女孩儿就瘦得没个人样了。这可把陆员外急坏了，他知道，现在唯一的办法就是放出风声，广招名医来给晓晓治病。一夜之间，陆家镇到处都贴满了陆员外家的告示：“因小女染病若能治愈愿赠一半家产。”county magistrate heard that Xiao Xiao was ill, he quickly asked the matchmaker to withdraw from the engagement.
