她出身贫寒，童年时代因其对山歌和黄梅调的热爱而触犯了家族的传统，她不得不离开家园。她的聪明才智和勤勉好学的性格让她在13岁时成为严云高门下的学生，在枞阳、桐城等地展现自己对黄梅戏艺术的热情与天赋。随后，她又得益于著名老演员丁永泉的指导，不断地在贵池、青阳农村以及安庆、皖南地区表演自己的才华。
1947年，她曾跟随胡金涛和刘凤云学习京剧，并在此过程中进一步丰富了自己的表演技巧。在1949年之后，她又有幸拜北昆名角白云生为师，从而不断汲取各式各样的剧种精髓，以提升自己的艺术水准。1953年，she joined the Anhui Province Huangmei Opera Troupe, marking a significant milestone in her artistic journey.
her voice was characterized by its clarity and sweetness, with a singing style that was both simple and elegant. Her acting was known for its authenticity and depth, as she always tried to connect with the emotions of her characters. She portrayed many memorable roles throughout her career, such as Tao Jinhua in "Pig Grass", Seven Fairies in "The Heavenly Match", Feng Sugen in "The Lady's Husband", Weaving Maiden in "Cowherd and Weaving Maiden", and Zhao Wusen in "After Harvest". Some of these performances were even adapted into films. Over the course of 23 years, she made substantial contributions to the development of Huangmei Opera art.
