据说,他与其父不 alike in appearance, known for his cunning and ability to understand the times, making him the first genius of the Ming dynasty. His father was old and tired, so he often relied on his son to handle official affairs. His son's advice was often accepted by his father, and he was highly praised by Emperor Jiajing.
He was known for his wealth and power. He controlled all aspects of official appointments and promotions, with everything determined by bribes. He amassed a vast fortune through corruption.
He was eventually accused of treason and executed.
His life is also associated with a famous novel called "The Plum in the Golden Vase," which some believe may have been inspired by him.
His wife had many concubines, but he still wanted more. He lived a life of luxury and extravagance, which made him unpopular among the people.
There were those who opposed him, such as Shen Lian and Yang Jingyun (a righteous man), who criticized him for being corrupt and harming the country. However, they were both punished for their actions.
In 1564 AD (Jiajing 43rd year), Shen Lian accused Jian Xiu () (the number two eunuch) of embezzlement during an inspection tour at Beijing's city gate markets; however this accusation did not stick due to lack of evidence from other officials present during that time period when there were no witnesses or direct proof against them yet then after these charges failed against them both went into hiding out fearing execution while others continued fighting against Shen Lian until finally getting arrested again under false pretenses related to Yang Jingyun’s death sentence whereupon they themselves would face severe punishment including possibly even death sentences themselves if found guilty!
