人民英雄纪念碑兴建委员会，由著名领导人彭真担任主任委员，而郑振铎、梁思成则担任副主任委员。这不仅是一项工程，更是一次集思广益、智慧碰撞的过程。专家们共设计出百余种方案，每一幅每一角都承载着对先烈们无尽敬意。而在浮雕画片方面，则由中国科学院现代史研究所所长范文澜先生深入研究，以确保其内容既准确又生动。
1952年8月1日，这座宏伟建筑正式开工建设，其壮丽景象逐渐从泥土中崛起。经过六年的努力，1958年4月22日，人民英雄纪念碑终于完工，并在5月1日隆重揭幕。这座用汉白玉砌成的大理石塔，不仅是对革命先烈永恒怀念，也是对中华民族伟大复兴的一份坚定信仰。
Peoples' Heroes Memorial, located at the heart of Beijing Square. On September 30, 1949, the First Session of the Chinese People's Consultative Conference decided to build this memorial in Beijing to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in the People's Liberation War. At 6 pm that day, representatives from all walks of life gathered on Tiananmen Square for a groundbreaking ceremony filled with solemnity and grandeur. Under the leadership of Chairman Mao himself, they took turns digging into the soil to lay down each stone for this monument. After thorough discussions across China and revisions based on public opinion, plans for this monumental project were finally set in motion.
The Memorial Committee was led by Beijing Mayor Peng Zhen as its chairman and architects Zheng Zhendong and Liang Sicheng as vice chairmen. This endeavor not only required technical expertise but also brought together diverse perspectives from various fields. Over a hundred designs were proposed before settling on one that would embody both national pride and respect for those who had fought for freedom.
In creating the sculptures adorning these monuments, researchers delved deep into historical records under guidance from Van Wenlan – director of Modern History Institute at Chinese Academy Sciences – ensuring accuracy while infusing life into every detail.
From August 1st to December 31st (in two stages), construction began after years-long planning culminating in completion on April 22nd in '58; it was unveiled May first with an inaugural ceremony marking its grand opening - an architectural masterpiece hewn out of white marble!
