Peoples' Heroes Memorial, located in the heart of Beijing Square. On September 30, 1949, the First Plenary Session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference made a historic decision: to build a solemn monument in the capital city to commemorate those who have sacrificed their lives in the War of Liberation. At that time on an afternoon at six o'clock, representatives from all over China gathered on the square before and laid down the foundation for this grand endeavor. They took turns as leaders to hold trowels and place stones on the ground, marking a momentous occasion.
Subsequently, extensive discussions were held throughout society and finally determined by nationwide consensus. By spring of 1952, more than one hundred excellent architects and experts had collectively contributed designs for various patterns which were then displayed through multiple channels for public opinion collection and refinement until reaching final form.
The Construction Committee for Peoples' Heroes Memorial was chaired by Beijing Mayor Peng Zhen with Zheng Zhendong and Liang Sicheng serving as vice-chairs. Additionally set up was an engineering department comprising seven subcommittees responsible respectively for design work.
