Peoples' Heroes Monument, located at the heart of Beijing Square. On September 30, 1949, the First Plenary Session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference made a historic decision: to commemorate the heroes who sacrificed in the War of Liberation and build a grand monument in Beijing. At 6 pm that day, representatives from all over China gathered on the square to lay the foundation for this noble cause. They took turns holding pickaxes and placing stones on the ground, marking the beginning of Peoples' Heroes Monument.
Subsequently, extensive discussions were held nationwide to determine the design of the monument. In spring 1952, more than a hundred outstanding architects and experts collaborated on this project. They designed numerous patterns and sought opinions from various sectors through different channels before refining them into their final form.
The Construction Committee for Peoples' Heroes Monument was headed by Beijing Mayor Peng Zhen as chairman-in-chief with Zheng Zhenduo and Liang Sicheng as vice-chairmen-in-chief. Additionally, there were seven specialized groups responsible for different aspects of work under its engineering department. A special committee led by Van Wenlan from Institute of Modern History at Chinese Academy Sciences was tasked with researching historical materials needed for carving sculptures.
On August 1st in 1952, construction began on Peoples' Heroes Monument; it would take six years to transform it from raw earth into an awe-inspiring edifice before being completed on April 22nd in '58 and unveiled grandly on May first later that year.
