The Monkey King A Tale of Chinas Most Mischievous
Introduction
The Monkey King, also known as Sun Wukong, is a central figure in one of the most beloved Chinese novels, Journey to the West. This story has been passed down for generations and has become an integral part of Chinese folklore. The novel tells the tale of a mischievous monkey who gains supernatural powers and joins forces with two other companions on a journey to retrieve sacred scriptures from India.
Sun Wukong's Origins
In ancient times, there was once a stone that contained all 72 heavenly secrets. One day, it was discovered by Sun Wukong, who was born from this magical stone. He grew up in the mountains with his father and mother until he became too powerful for them to control.
Gaining Supernatural Powers
Sun Wukong gained his incredible strength after eating peaches given by Chang'e (the goddess of immortality). He then used these powers to rule over the mountain where he lived and even challenged heaven itself.
Banished from Heaven
Sun Wukong caused chaos in heaven when he stole peaches meant for immortals only. As punishment, Buddha bound him with five hundred heavy iron chains which were so strong that no mortal could break them.
Meeting Tang Sanzang
One day while wandering through forests filled with demons and spirits searching for food or shelter, Sun Wukong encountered Tang Sanzang (a Buddhist monk) who had just lost his disciples due to their death at the hands of demons during their journey westward pilgrimage.
Becoming Tang Sanzang's Disciple
Tang Sanzang took pity on Sun Wukong and freed him from his chains but warned him not to cause any more trouble if they were going together on their journey westward pilgrimage.
