Chang'e and the Moon Palace: A Lunar Legend from China's Past
The legend of Chang'e, also known as Hsi Wang Mu or the Queen of Heaven, is a well-known tale in Chinese mythology. It tells the story of an ordinary woman who becomes extraordinary due to her love for her husband and her desire to ascend to heaven.
The Story Begins
In ancient times, there was a young couple named Chang'e and Houyi who lived in a small village surrounded by mountains. They were deeply in love with each other but their happiness was short-lived as they soon found themselves facing poverty and hardship.
One day, while searching for food in the forest, Chang'e accidentally picked some magical elixir that granted eternal youth and immortality. She unknowingly consumed it when she returned home, causing her body to transform into that of an immortal being.
Houyi became aware of his wife's transformation when he saw her levitating above their house one night. He begged her not to leave him behind but Chang'e couldn't resist ascending to heaven where she could join other immortals like herself.
A Lonely Journey
After leaving Houyi on earth, Chang'e became lonely without him by her side. She spent most of her time gazing at the moon which reminded her of him every night. Eventually, she decided to live on the moon permanently so that she could always see him from afar whenever he looked up at the sky during his daily work outside their home.
Meanwhile back on earth, Houyi tried everything possible just so he could be reunited with his beloved wife again. He practiced meditation diligently hoping that one day he would become immortal too just like Chang'e so they can be together once more.
Their Love Endures Time
