The story begins with Meng Jiangnu, a young woman from the state of Qi during the Warring States period (475-221 BCE). Her husband, Shi Guiren, is drafted into the army to fight against their neighboring state. In his absence, she stays behind to take care of her mother-in-law.
Love and Loyalty
As time passes by without any news from her husband's whereabouts or fate, Meng Jiangnu remains steadfast in her loyalty and devotion to him. She wears mourning clothes all year round and prays for his safe return daily.
A Glimmer of Hope
One day, while praying at a local temple dedicated to her ancestors' spirits after a long period without any news from her husband or father-in-law (who was also away fighting), she sees an apparition of Shi Guiren telling her he is still alive but gravely injured on the battlefield.
Sacrifice Amidst War
Overjoyed by this news but deeply concerned about his well-being due to war injuries sustained during battles with other states vying for power in ancient China at that time period—Shi Guiren asks Meng Jiangnu to remain strong and continue taking care of their family members left behind back home until he returns safely home again if possible; if not then he would want them all reunited as soon as possible under heaven even though it might be difficult due
The Tragic End
However just days later upon receiving word via messengers sent by both sides involved that they were defeated & captured together along with many soldiers from both armies & taken prisoner where eventually executed because they refused surrendering themselves over which caused great distress amongst families who had loved ones lost within those events including hers own family members especially since everyone knew how much love there was between them two people before death separated them forever now we mourn our loss together here today remembering what happened exactly like it did so many years ago now let us honor our fallen heroes who fought bravely till end sacrificing everything including lives just like my beloved wife did too when I am gone may you rest peacefully knowing I will always cherish memories we shared together until eternity comes calling once more goodbye my darling dear friend farewell
