1.2 The Tale of the Cowherd and the Weaving Maiden
Laughing at Love: A Heavenly Comedy
In ancient China, there lived a cowherd named Niulang who fell deeply in love with a celestial being named Zhinü, or the Weaving Maiden. Their love story is as old as time itself – it transcends boundaries of heaven and earth.
The two lovers were separated by their different worlds, but they did not let that stop them from pursuing each other. They even had two children together, whom they raised on Earth while continuing to live apart.
One day, when their son was old enough to help his father herd cows in the sky and weave silk for his mother among the stars, he refused to go back home with them. Instead, he chose to stay on Earth with his friends.
Niulang realized that he could no longer keep up appearances for both worlds alone and decided to take drastic measures – he built a raft out of reeds and set sail across the Milky Way River (which separates Heaven from Earth) with Zhinü by his side.
As fate would have it, during their journey across this heavenly waterway (the river), they encountered some mischievous spirits who tried to hinder their progress. However these spirits were eventually chased away by an angry dragonfly sent by one of Niulang's ancestors!
After many trials & tribulations along this celestial journey—some hilarious moments included like when Zhinü accidentally turned her clothes into pieces of fabric which she then used as makeshift sails!—they finally reached their destination whereupon they vowed never again leave each other’s sides evermore than necessary for family obligations; henceforth living happily ever after within reach yet far enough away so neither could claim complete ownership over either world nor lives forever bound between those realms above & below us all alike…
