The Epic Tales of Ancient Chinese Mythology
The Legend of Chang'e and the Moon
In ancient Chinese mythology, there is a legend about Chang'e, the goddess of the moon. According to this story, Chang'e was once an ordinary woman who drank an elixir that granted her immortality. However, she accidentally consumed it in one day instead of over many years as intended, which caused her to rise into the sky and become trapped on the moon.
Chang'e was accompanied by a companion named Yutu (also known as Jade Rabbit), who was created from a piece of jade by Hou Yi (the archer god) to help Chang'e with her chores on the moon. This mythological tale has been passed down for generations and remains an important part of Chinese folklore today.
The Monkey King's Journey: A Tale from "Journey to the West"
Another famous story from ancient Chinese mythology is "Journey to the West," which tells the adventures of four travelers - Monkey King Sun Wukong, Tang Sanzang (a Buddhist monk), Zhu Bajie (a half-human half-pig demon), and Sha Wujing (an ogre). They embark on a journey westward in search for sacred scriptures while facing various challenges along their way.
Sun Wukong gained his powers after eating magical peaches that made him immortal; he also had 72 golden hair-like protrusions called "hair-whip" that could transform into various objects or weapons at will. Despite his mischievous nature and frequent rebellions against heaven itself, Sun Wukong ultimately becomes a loyal follower of Tang Sanzang throughout their epic journey.
The Dragon Kings' Rule Over Water
In traditional Chinese culture, dragons are revered symbols representing good fortune and prosperity due to their association with water sources like rivers and oceans. There are three dragon kings - East Sea Dragon King Ao Qin; Middle Ocean Dragon King Ao Guang; and West Sea Dragon King Ao Jun - each responsible for managing its respective body of water according to Taoist principles.
