The Legendary Creatures of Chinese Mythology

The Dragon

In Chinese mythology, dragons are revered as symbols of power and good fortune. They are often depicted as long, serpentine creatures with five claws, flamboyant whiskers, and a flattened head. According to legend, dragons have the ability to control the weather and bring forth rain or sunshine at will. They are also said to possess great wisdom and knowledge.

The Phoenix

The phoenix is another mythical creature that holds significant importance in Chinese culture. It is described as a beautiful bird with vibrant plumage and a majestic appearance. According to legend, the phoenix is born from its own ashes every 500 years or so when it dies in a blaze of fire.

The Qilin

The qilin is an auspicious creature that appears only during times of peace and prosperity. It has the body of a deer, scales like an alligator's back, horns like an antelope's but they are spiraling upwards towards its shoulders instead downwards like an antelope's horn shape which gives it unique features compared to other mythical creatures.

4.The White Tiger

The white tiger is one among four celestial animals that symbolize Confucian virtues: benevolence (the dragon), wisdom (the phoenix), justice (the unicorn) - actually known as qilin - courage (white tiger). In ancient China's zodiac cycle called Sheng Xiao or "Birth Ascribed Animal" system where people were categorized into twelve animal groups based on their birth year.
