Despite facing adversity from those in power, Zhong Kui continued his fight against evil until one day he received imperial favor from Emperor Taizhong Li Zhi himself. The emperor recognized Zhong's potential as a protector of peace and justice within society. In gratitude for saving him from certain death at the hands of bandits while on an expedition beyond Beijing city walls, Emperor Li Zhi promoted him posthumously as Generalissimo Protector Against Demons.
