His birthplace was said to be in present-day Jiangsu Province. The story goes that he was born with extraordinary abilities from his mother who had made a pact with a powerful deity before her death.

However, due to his unconventional methods which often involved breaking laws or ignoring established norms, he faced opposition from government officials who saw him as an outlaw.
The Emperor's Favor
Despite facing adversity from those in power, Zhong Kui continued his fight against evil until one day he received imperial favor from Emperor Taizhong Li Zhi himself. The emperor recognized Zhong's potential as a protector of peace and justice within society. In gratitude for saving him from certain death at the hands of bandits while on an expedition beyond Beijing city walls, Emperor Li Zhi promoted him posthumously as Generalissimo Protector Against Demons.
